Electrical panel upgrade cost in Connecticut (2026)
Three different jobs get called "panel upgrade"
The price spread in every cost guide comes from mixing three scopes. Know which one you're asking for.

Line items that move the number
- Panel hardware. A 200A panel unit runs $250–$350 (This Old House, 03/2026). Brand-name 40-space panels with a main breaker sit at the top of that band.
- Labor. National guides put electrician rates at $40–$250/hour and a panel job at 4–8 hours (HomeAdvisor, 06/2026); CT contractors describe most upgrades as a one-day job with power off 6–10 hours (Chestnut, 08/2025; TJF, 06/2026).
- Meter socket and mast. Meter box replacement adds $1,800–$3,500 in the national guides (This Old House, 03/2026). Eversource requires sockets from its approved list with lever-operated bypass jaws (Eversource approved socket list, 09/2024).
- Surge protection. Under NEC 2020 §230.67, a Type 1 or Type 2 surge protective device is required whenever service equipment is replaced. Budget $70–$700 installed, typical $300 (HomeAdvisor, 06/2026).
- AFCI breakers. Where branch-circuit wiring is modified, replaced or extended, NEC 2020 §210.12(D) requires AFCI protection; a panel-only relocation is a narrow exception. Ten to twenty AFCI breakers add real cost — ask for the count in the estimate.
- Grounding and bonding. Older Fairfield County homes often lack a second ground rod or water-pipe bond; contractors fold this into the heavy-up price.
- Permit. $60–$300 by town. Stamford: $13 per $1,000 of job value, $60 minimum, plus the $0.26/$1,000 state education fee. Trumbull: $5 per $100 on the first $1,000, $10 per $1,000 after, $60 minimum. All 12 towns →
- Utility coordination. For a service upgrade in Eversource territory the electrician must obtain a service request number at least 15 days before the work (Eversource cut-and-reconnect policy, 2018). There is no utility fee for a standard residential upgrade in the policy documents; the cost is scheduling lead time.
- Subpanel instead. If the main service is fine and you only need more breaker spaces, a subpanel runs $400–$1,750 nationally (This Old House, 03/2026) and $1,000–$2,000 in CT (TJF, 06/2026).
What a good Connecticut estimate shows
- Scope named as one of the three above, with the service amperage before and after.
- Panel make/model, breaker count, number of AFCI and GFCI breakers.
- Meter socket model (should be on the Eversource or UI approved list) and whether the mast/entrance cable is replaced.
- Grounding electrode work listed separately.
- Permit fee and who pulls it (a CT-licensed E-1 contractor, or the homeowner for an owner-occupied single-family home under CGS §20-340).
- Utility service request number, or the date it will be filed.
- Expected power-off window and the inspection step before the meter is resealed.
