EV charger installation in Connecticut: circuit, cost and 2026 incentives
Sizing the circuit
EV charging is a continuous load by definition (NEC §625.42), so the circuit is sized at 125% of the charger's maximum current:

Plug-in units must not exceed 80% of the receptacle circuit; anything above 48A must be hardwired. GFCI protection for the equipment is required under §625.54. Most Fairfield County drivers charging overnight are well served by 32–40A; 48A matters for two EVs or short overnight windows.
What it costs
- Charger unit: $300–$1,000+ (Angi, 07/2026). Utility-qualified smart chargers cluster at $400–$700.
- Labor: $400–$1,200. Short run from a panel in the garage sits at the bottom; a finished-basement run to a detached garage sits at the top.
- New wiring: $500–$1,500 depending on distance and conduit.
- Permit: $100–$200 in the national guide; in Fairfield County towns the electrical permit is value-based, typically $60–$150 for a charger. Town fees →

2026 incentives, exactly as the utilities state them
Eversource and United Illuminating run one joint Connecticut EV Charging Program (manual revised May 18, 2026):
- $100 enrollment incentive for customers who enroll in managed charging through telematics or a qualified Level 2 smart charger and who do not take the upfront rebate.
- Baseline tier: $10/month, capped at $120/year — charge 80%+ off-peak (outside 3–9 p.m. non-holiday weekdays), at least one session a month.
- Advanced tier: $25/month, capped at $300/year — set a daily schedule, no more than two overrides a month, participate in demand-response events.
- $1,500 upfront rebate for a qualified charger and/or wiring (subpanel, panel amperage increase, conduit, 240V outlet) — only for households at or below 300% of the Federal Poverty Level or in High Poverty, Low Opportunity areas, effective January 1, 2026 under SB4. Requires a paid electrician invoice and a 24-month managed-charging commitment with prorated clawback.
- The universal $1,000 wiring rebate is gone. Eversource's program-changes page states rebates were limited by income from January 1, 2026 and urged applications by December 31, 2025.
Apply through eversource.com or, for UI customers, the ev.energy portal. Eversource says rebates are typically issued in 6–8 weeks; UI within 40 business days. Both utilities offer general time-of-day rates (Eversource Rate 7, UI Rate RT: on-peak weekdays noon–8 p.m.) but no EV-specific rate as of the pages checked.
Federal credit status
The §30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property credit (30% up to $1,000 for a home charger in an eligible census tract) ends for property placed in service after June 30, 2026 — Public Law 119-21 §70504, confirmed in IRS fact sheet FS-2025-05. A charger installed in Fairfield County today does not qualify.
The order that saves money
- Load calculation first (free with the estimate). It decides 32A vs 48A and whether the panel is involved.
- If you may qualify for the $1,500 rebate, pick a charger from the utility's Qualified Products List before buying anything.
- Enroll in managed charging the same week the charger is energized; the annual incentive starts when you enroll, not when you install.
- Keep the paid invoice and the permit final — both are required for the utility rebate and useful at resale.
