Standby generator installation in Fairfield County

Short version. The national average for a standby generator project is $5,160, with 20–24 kW units at $5,000–$6,500 and 26–32 kW at $6,500–$15,000 before labor ($1,500–$5,000), transfer switch (~$1,200), pad (~$1,000) and permits (Angi, 09/2026). In Fairfield County the schedule is set by the gas utility's 30-day meter-upgrade process, not by the electrician.

Sequence that avoids a month of waiting

  1. Gas first. SCG and CNG require a "Meter Upgrade Request for Emergency Generators" — the utilities state all fields are required and to allow thirty days. Eversource Gas customers: confirm meter and service-line sizing before buying the unit. Propane: the propane supplier sizes the tank and regulator instead.
  2. Load calculation. Whole-house vs managed. A 22–26 kW unit with load-shedding modules covers most 200A homes; a 100A home usually needs the smaller unit anyway. Load calc guide →
  3. Placement. Manufacturer clearances (NFPA 37: typically 18 inches from the house, 5 feet from openings), zoning setbacks, and the town noise ordinance. Ask the building department before the pad is poured.
  4. Permits. Electrical permit for the transfer switch and feeder; gas or mechanical permit for the fuel line; some towns want a zoning sign-off. Fees by town →
  5. Install and inspect. Electrical inspection, gas pressure test, then the utility upgrades the meter and the unit is commissioned.

Questions homeowners ask

Automatic standby or portable with an interlock?

A standby unit (22–26 kW, automatic transfer switch, natural gas or propane) starts itself and carries the whole house; expect $8,000–$15,000 all-in when you add the pad, gas work and electrical. A portable generator with an interlock kit and inlet box runs $400–$850 for the electrical side plus the generator, and you start it and plug it in yourself.

Does the gas company need to be involved?

In most of Fairfield County, yes. Southern Connecticut Gas and Connecticut Natural Gas both require a Meter Upgrade Request for Emergency Generators and state "please allow thirty days for processing." Eversource Gas says to confirm the meter and service line are sized before installing. File this first — it is the long pole.

Are there noise rules?

Connecticut leaves generator noise to the town. DEEP says local officials are the first point of contact and that municipal noise ordinances adopted since July 1, 2022 must comply with state regulations. Setbacks come from zoning and the manufacturer's NFPA 37 clearances; check both with the building department.

Can I finance it through the Green Bank?

Standby generators are not on the Smart-E eligible-upgrades list as of July 2026; battery storage and "elevate or relocate service equipment" are. Ask the lender whether a generator can ride as related work under the 25% allowance on an eligible project.
